Heliconias are known to those who grow them as a host flower to many birds, especially the hummingbirds. Because of its unique characteristics, it is often used as a specimen for tropical gardens.

Grows up to 4-6 ft. tall (120-180 cm) and 3-6 ft. wide (90-180 cm). Performs best in full sun or slight shade in humus-rich, constantly moist, acidic or neutral, well-drained soils. Heliconia is mildly toxic to cats.

Rhizomes usually sprout within two months of planting. Smaller species heliconia’s will usually flower within six months of propagation from the rhizome. New plants need lots of water, but then only need more as the soil begins to dry out. Fertilize regularly for best growth and flowering. In the warmer summer months, you can take your heliconias outdoors, where hummingbirds will enjoy the flowers.
